The Spring Garden
Mother Earth is cross with us. We’ve been taking everything for granted. Flying about the world without a thought, driving up and down motorways in our personal vehicles, using up the earth’s resources for throwaway items that give a second of pleasure in our man-made culture of mass consumption.
I don’t want to go back to ‘normal’. This is our time to rethink how we travel, work and connect. We have to consider the overwhelming choices in supermarkets, the stuff we consume and origins of our products. Those of us at home — working, shielding, isolating, distancing — we can use some of the time we save to cook from scratch, clean, mend, and reconnect with loved ones near and far.
I actually love being at home. I’m at risk of being a complete recluse given half the chance. Plus I’m enjoying watching the garden grow. The buds just about to pop and burst into life. The Spring blossom. The fresh green leaves showing on the trees. The tulips in full glory and the bulbs just peaking through.
My husband is the don of gardens, this is our back:
And the front garden, when we moved here in 2016 this was all gravel. John never stops!
And here’s the show stopper that passers by admire the most, John’s bin store roof garden:
In the last three weeks John’s levelled off the very back of the garden, built some raised beds and laid some decking for a patio area, which is a lovely suntrap in the afternoon :
The blossom on the apple, pear, plum and cherry trees is just gorgeous:
And next door’s Joey spends lots of time here, sniffing plants and hanging out:
And here I am looking all House on the Prairie :
So hug a tree, reflect and be more Joey.
